Don’t necessarily play your ladder deck unless it also shines in tournament play.
A lot of people run certain decks for ladder with cards that might not work well with the Tournament Cap. This is because some cards give the significant change once leveled up (for example, Royal Giant and Elite Barbarians)
At Tourney Cap, it is essential to either stick to a deck that you have a lot of success with at tourney cap or a proven meta deck that you feel comfortable to play with.
I don’t have the card X 🙁
Say you want to use 3 Musketeer Heal but you don’t have Night Witch and Bandit.
You can change the deck up to the old school 3 Musketeers deck with a Knight and Minion Horde. Despite the playstyle being different, it will still be a strong deck. Some quick substitutions you can consider for popular cards will be listed below.
Practice with the deck first with different match-ups
Lets say you are mainly a ladder player with little Challenge experience. Rather than smacking together a deck that people have success with and playing poorly, practice with clanmates or friends via friendly battles. Play against different decks and see how you fare vs them.
Going back to the 3M Heal example, maybe you might want to practice against hard counters and tough match-ups in general due to the rock paper scissors nature of the meta. (Against Fireball Zap, P.E.K.K.A Lightning, Golem Lightning, Rocket etc)
Get as many games under your belt as possible with the deck you plan on running. Don’t make the first entry your warm-up. Unlike Grand Ghallenge, where it costs 100 gems to enter, this gives you a free entry. To maximize the value, get 12 wins in your free try rather than using the free try as a trial run.
Do not use the deck which has many hard-counters
Golem Lightning is undoubtedly a deck that has been very strong for a long time. It is still very viable because of the Tornado nerf making + Tornado weaker.
However it does have quite a lot of weaknesses: Tornado being one, 3 Musketeers, (arguably) Bridge Spam, P.E.K.K.A Etc.
Because of this, despite Golem being solid on the ladder, in an all-or-nothing situation like this, where you will ideally want to get 12 wins on the first try, it’s best not risk it by running a deck which has so many hard matchups.
Run an anti-meta deck!
The previous tips have all been about adapting to the meta. But if you are someone who has experience with Challenges and has an above average level of understanding to the game, you can have a at making your own deck!
Remember, meta decks came from someone somewhere. Who knows the next meta deck might be a deck made to counter this meta? When creating this deck keep in mind what popular decks this meta has and include counter cards.
Some cards which are good at countering popular decks right now:
Tombstone -Excellent againse Bridge Spam, 3M, P.E.K.K.A, Night Witch and Inferno Dragon. It might be a good pick for your deck.
Fireball – Despite Poison being very strong right now, Poison is hard countered by cards like the Heal. This makse beating a 3 Musketeers deck very difficult.
Hence why using an immediate damage spell like Fireball can be very advantageous.
Rocket – Similar as above.
+ Tornado – This is arguably the strongest defensive combo right now.
Assuming your deck isn’t very expensive, using this 8 Elixir combination can be very advantageous in order to make your cycle deck a lot more defensively secure.
P.E.K.K.A – Can be used to answer the opponent’s P.E.K.K.A or tank, Battle Ram, 3 Musketeers etc.
This is a very solid defensive card. Should not be used as a win condition.
You don’t have to play in one stretch
You have a few days to get the 12 wins. There isn’t a rush.
If you are busy, 2-3 games a day should be okay. Take a break and then try again in the next day or several hours later! This may come especially handy right after a loss so you don’t go on tilt because losing can cause you to make more misplays and then lose.
Listen to some music
This really isn’t a game-play tip. However it is something I find very helpful. I find myself do it better in tournaments and challenges, even in ladder by listening to some music.
